Sometimes the simplest things in life can bring immense happiness or satisfactions. Earlier today I purchased a topper for my stone hard mattress. Basically it’s an extra 3 inches of memory foam (heaven) to sleep on every night. It’s such a simple material thing but I feel much more satisfaction than the money I spent on it.
In fact, I’ve written on this subject before; when I first arrived in Charleston, one of the first things I did was buy a toaster. My dormitory rules for the last year have prohibited us from enjoying the wondrous invention that cooks bread to a crisp. I think I paid twenty dollars for my toaster, but with the satisfaction it has brought me, it’s more valuable than some of the things I’ve spend a couple hundred dollars on.
When I went to Spain for the first few years, the family I stayed with had a salad spinner that they used often. After my final visit I ran into one at IKEA and found some weird happiness within myself. The six dollars that I paid for that silly thing could never amount to the happiness I brought myself when I got it. All it did was spin salads but to me it felt like so much more.
That’s why when you find something that makes you bring happiness to yourself, feel it. Live that feeling and be happy. Sometimes it’s the simplest things in life that bring great satisfaction.
